Remembering McQueen

LEE ALEXANDER MCQUEEN (17 MARCH 1969 – 11 FEBRUARY 2010)

We are remembering McQueen today, as it is the 5th anniversary of his death. He has been a great inspiration and influence to both of us in more ways than one. His daring catwalk shows and use of materials were just a few of the things that marked him as one of the greatest designers of our time. He brought art back to fashion; it was darkly beautiful.

He was also inspirational in his determination to succeed, and would not take being told ‘No’ lying down. Proving that no dream is too big, and that with a lot of hard work and focus you can achieve anything you want.

We also felt a great connection with him due to his undeniable pride in his Scottish heritage (on his father’s side). His final resting place shows his heart belonged to Scotland; choosing to be buried on the Isle of Skye, where his father’s ancestors are said to have originated.

McQueen is still greatly missed and will forever be an icon of fashion. We hope he is finally at peace.

Goodbye to a True Inspiration

Oscar de la Renta (1932-2014)

We have always been a fan of the great man that was Oscar de la Renta; for anyone who knows fashion, knows how wonderful his creations are. When you think fabulous ball gowns you think Oscar, when you think glamour you think Oscar. His blend of feminine design has always been an inspiration to us,  an influence on our designs and our own style. He is an icon who will truly be missed.

The image on the left from the TV show Sex and the City is one of the first things that I thought about. I have also noticed how prevalent this image has been over social media in relation to Oscar's passing, and it shows how iconic this image and dress is. For some reason my mind went to this TV moment, when Aleksandr Petrovsky "The Russian", says he knows him personally as 'just' Oscar, to a flabbergasted Carrie, after reading a section from Vogue to him. Later in the episode we see him presenting Carrie with the same dress to go to the Opera, a favour from Oscar it seems.

I think we all just want someone to buy us an Oscar dress and then take us to... McDonalds? Only Carrie could get away with this one.

“Cocktails at Tiffany’s calls for classic charm. Oscar de la Renta sleeveless silk full skirted dress with black patent leather bow belt. Now that is pure poetry”
